The Art of Writing A Good Blog Post

computerandblog

One of the biggest problems I see in the blogosphere is neglect. The initial butterfly stage wore off, and now the blog is being neglected. It happens. You thought by going all-in for a few months would land you in a better place than where you are, and now there are too many blogs...whatever your excuses may be...let them go. We live once, DO NOT GIVE UP and you will succeed.. This article is a message to myself just as much as it is to others. Let's write some killer blogs!

Organize

a document or folder with all the assets needed for the blog - visuals, important references, sources of images or arguments, etc.
the information you are presenting into small digestible paragraphs or sentences.
a list of your keywords, remember who your audience is (the people that will benefit most from what you're posting), and create keywords that will get that audience - long tail keywords are actually better.
blog paragraphs up by using Headings/Titles with larger type.

Prioritize

information in the best way that you can.
identifying keywords in the first 100 words is important.
Make headings stand out.
Highlight important information.
Make keywords and phrases noticeable by making the text bold.

Optimize

People read less and scan more online, so make sure your copy is concise by removing extra words.
Try adding adjectives to make your statements more precise.
Remove extra words.
Speak plainly and remove jargon/idioms. The BIGGEST pet-peave for all writers is to use popular idioms like "run of the mill" instead of explaining what exactly that means to you and your blog post.
Waffle, hype, long words and long sentences make it harder for people to read, remember and engage with what you say.***

Visualize

white space is your friend.
form & function are your friends. Google it!
If you can say translate what you're trying to convey with an image, infographic, or visual, do it! Break up text with visuals.
Make sure your visuals have short titles relating to the post, give them MetaTags.
Credit images by putting the source under it in small type.
[this is also amazing for Pinterest because you can use a visual on your page to pin your blog post to Pinterest, casting a wider net to catch people's attention.

Search Engine Optimization

don't let this acronym confuse you or let it stop you from writing. it's worth investing in or really learning how to do this. SEO is just using words that are relevant to your post, and represent your blog's niche; SEO is basically making your website and your blog posts easily identified and organized into the bigger picture of blog posts by everyone else. You might think "Top 10 Blogs" is a good title, but really adding specificity while still keeping it concise, is better - why? Because people big on words or phrases, so the best way to get ahead is to use unique phrases and what they call "long-tail-keywords."

SEO is a critical aspect of how your website will rank in Google - and let's be honest, do you go past the 1st or 2nd page of Google Results? So investing in an SEO tool, if you don't want to do the work yourself could be your best option - as if you're writing without SEO/keywords (especially the long tail keywords) then it's going to be very difficult for people to reach your blog organically.
Squarespace doesn't have any plug in's like YOAST for SEO...so if you're on Squarespace your best chance is to 1. hire someone who can work exclusively on your seo or 2. buy an SEO program. You don't need to learn SEO when you're running a business, you need to pay for a service until you get the hang of it. Read more here.

Mix it up

Formats of Posts
Length of Posts (General rules, most posts should be 300 words (if you're not such a skilled writer) or 600 words for more advanced writers, but rules are made to be broken. And if you have 600 words, I would def break it up with pics and quotes - translate the message in several ways so people who don't have a lot of time can look at the quotes and get a good idea of what it's about)
The content of your Posts
Types of Posts
This is especially useful when you're trying to grow - you can use analytics to see which posts and what type of posts are catching your readers attention the most
