We all carry stories. The experiences that we have in our lives make us who we are. Goodbye Animals is a hand illustrated series of 6 nearly extinct or endangered animals. What are the experiences of these animals? If they could tell their stories what would they say? Would we even listen? I attempt to tell their stories in a visual narrative using ink and a collage format. The longer that you look at each animal, the more information you will uncover.
Meet Goodbye Gorilla. Silverback Gorilla's are part of the Great Ape hierarchy and are closely linked to humans because of the similarity in our DNA (98% similar).
Did you know:
Although Gorilla's are closely linked to humans, they are mainly herbivores and their diet consists of mostly leaves, shoots, roots, vines and fruits. However, studies have shown that on occasion Gorilla’s do eat meat. But bugs and larve are their caviar.
All four species of Gorillas reside in Africa and they are the world's largest primates. A male Silverback Gorilla can weigh as much as 400 pounds and it is rumored that he could take on 20 human males in a fight (and win).
Gorillas are highly intelligent. They use tools and have various methods of communication, including some 25 different sounds. One famous captive-born individual, Koko, has been taught sign language since she was a year old. By the age of 40, she had a library of about 1,000 signs and could understand some 2,000 words of English.
What you can find in Goodbye Gorilla? Hints: "KoKo", King Kong, Ebola virus, Chain, African continent, Gorilla Skull, Human Skull, Gorilla in a tree, Adam and Eve, Dinosaur, the sky, Earth, Deforestation.
